DJAHAZI ~ In 2006 browsing the internet I found some images of wooden boats loaded with containers and I was introduced to the story of the Djahazi, ancient boats from the Comoros Isl...ands. The Djahazi which had been central to the local economy for centuries were banned by the President of the Comoros in 2006 with the aim of modernization. In 2008 I went to Comoros discovering that most of the dockers had become unemployed and that the boats had been left to sink ~ In the port of Moroni a Djahazi boat was split in half and placed in a 40ft container that travelled from Comoros to Marghera, an industrial district just outside Venice ~ Five days before the opening of the Biennale the boat was reassembled, placed in to the water and loaded with a container.
